"New" House

It appears I completely forgot about my plan to blog about the home buying process.  Let me sum it up for you: it's l-o-o-o-o-o-ong.

I am actually (very) happily settled into the new house.  We were able to move forward with the second house we had an accepted offer on.  The home inspector was only able to find one problem (the paint on the bulkhead door was chipped, and had to be repainted).  Once he got his second fee for doing the follow-up inspection, we were good to go!

We got the keys on April 15th, and Dad moved in right away.  He literally brought a small mat with him and slept on the floor in his upstairs apartment that night.  I'm not sure if it was more excitement over the new place, or excitement over not staying in our (very small) spare bedroom for four months.

We love the house - the cats are incredibly happy - they have tons of space - and huge many-windowed porches on the first and second floors - we have a huge back yard, that was already set up for a really large garden.  This year, our gardens were completely populated with seedlings people gave us, or old seeds Dad or I had from previous years.  We've already started planning out for next year.

The house itself is awesome - it was built in the late 1910s - early 1920s (I just can't remember which), and it's on an island!  A certain family member of mine told me that it's "not really an island," according to her, the fact that there is a bridge to our island means that it's not real - you have to take a boat to "real" islands.  I didn't comment on this incorrect assertion, as I like to keep the peace as much as possible, and since this has been a pretty wacky year, my silence seemed to be the right move.

I'm sure you've seen that I've updated the Netflix Christmas movie list for 2016 - I will do at least one more update before the big day.

Until then - try to enjoy a delicious moose mug of eggnog!

Christmas Comes Early (every year)

If I were to make a list of my favorite things, I can assure you that sleeping would be right up there with awesome things like cotton candy, butterflies, and the smell of my sister's Peaches and Cream Barbie back in 1987 - I LOVE sleeping.

Sadly, I suffer from an inability to shut my brain off when it comes time to get to sleep, so often am still wide awake and thinking really cool thoughts in the wee hours of the morning.

This causes me some problems most of the time when I need to wake up and go to work in the morning.  I use several alarms (the best thing I discovered recently is an android app that makes you do math problems in order to snooze your alarm), but still it takes a heaping helping of "you're going to be late and get fired" to get me out of my nice, warm bed in the morning. I have drawn a really terrible illustration of me, before I am forced to leave my down filled sanctuary.

HOWEVER - a magical thing happens every year - all of a sudden, I'm not awake as late as I thought I was, and I get to sleep in EVERY morning! I do happy dances throughout the day (preferably when no one is looking, but honestly, I'm not that self-conscious), and notice that the big black circles under my eyes seem to have shrunken.

Every day is a little more magical than the last. Example: on Monday night, I was ASLEEP before 11:30 pm!!!

I don't much appreciate the fact that it's dark out when I leave my office in the afternoon, but I LOVE the sleeping late.

Unfortunately, this magical period doesn't last too long (I like to put off changing the clock in my car for as long as possible to feel just a bit naughty pulling up to work at almost 9:00 am).  And I'm back to staying up too late, and forcing myself to brush my teeth in the bathroom at work because I just don't have time at home.

I know that in the spring I will look back on this blissful period and laugh, knowing there's no way that it's worth it, as I pry my red, salty eyes open, and arrive at work only to discover that I am, in fact, half an hour late, and my hair isn't brushed, and I hate everyone.

But for now, I continue with my happy dances in the shadows!

Christmas Preparations and Poor Parenting

I am quite sure that I made some serious promises (to myself) that I was going to be super blogging lady through December; I was going to host giveaways, sing carols, and generally ooze holiday spirit.

Honestly, I have no idea what I was thinking.  December is the busiest time of year for a gal who loves Christmas so much! I have had cookies to bake, presents to wrap, presents to buy, then more presents to wrap, buy, and repeat.  I have only updated the movie lists once (although I did FINALLY add an Amazon Prime Christmas movie page, and a page with just movies that I like - so that's something, right?).

I've definitely done some baking (although the big day is looming and I have a LOT more to do), but my tree didn't even get decorated until the second week of December (VERY unlike me - I'm a Sunday after Thanksgiving buyer and decorator), it actually stood in the living room naked for almost a week before we put the lights and decorations on!

You might be thinking I've lost my Christmas spirit - that after 33 amazing December 25ths, I'm worn out.  Maybe you are under the impression that I went all loopy, bought into the whole world ending on 12/21/12 dealio, and believed Christmas wouldn't come.  Perhaps you've been worried that I, like many fantastic soap opera characters, have amnesia, and speak with an accent.

None of these scenarios is remotely correct. The mundane reason I've been so lacking in the publishing department is due to an invisible, and evil, force: INFLUENZA.

Thankfully, my immune system is like an armored car with the instincts of a great white shark, and other than a brief paranoia-induced headache, I've been perfectly fine.  My poor girl, on the other hand, has been MISERABLE.  Two weeks ago, on Saturday, she wasn't feeling well.  By Sunday, she was running a decent fever, and by Monday morning, she was running a high (101 - 102) fever, so I called the doctor, explained the symptoms (classic flu stuff - nose, head, body aches, high fever, coughing, sneezing, exhaustion - I could go on, but you're literate, so are probably familiar with the list), and the prescribed her Tamiflu (which is crazy expensive).

She finally was able to go to school on that Friday, and has caught up on all her work.

Fast forward to tonight: I come home from picking up prescriptions at Walgreens, and the last baking items I needed from Hannaford, and she is asleep in her room. When I check on her, she says she has a sore throat, and I believe my response was that she had chores to do (fyi - I'm not a slave driver, I'm more of a super messy slacker, but it's almost CHRISTMAS, and standards are different).

For the next few hours, she complains about her sore throat, and after I borrow her chapstick, she mentions that might have been a bad idea, and I, of course, laugh it off.  Fast forward to a few minutes ago; I check to see what she's doing (shocker of all shocks, she's on Skype); she's bundled in her down comforter, plus a couple of fleece blankets, and her cheeks are bright as Rudolph's nose.  She complains of her throat again, so I huff, and get the thermometer.  Lo and behold, the kid has a 101 temperature.

Have I mentioned that we both got flu shots at the exact same time, same batch of shots, etc.???  I'm pretty sure it's not the flu again; or I should say, I'm refusing to even consider that the flu might be back for take two.

Hopefully my Iron-Man-like immune system will keep up the good work; I am SOOOO not okay with being sick on Christmas.

Oh - and hopefully Santa can overlook a dirty litterbox.

MOST of the presents!

List of Streaming Christmas Movies on Amazon Prime

If you're at all like me, Netflix just isn't enough for you anymore.  I've had an Amazon Prime membership for years, and when they started including streaming video with that, I didn't really pay much attention. Lately there have been more and more movies and shows added, and I decided it was high time I added an Amazon Prime Streaming Christmas Movies list to the blog!

*Be sure to check out the List of Streaming Christmas Movies on Netflix, my list of the BEST Streaming Christmas movies online, and for updates to all of these, be sure to follow me on Facebook.

Aliens First Christmas - Remember your first day at a new school - how you weren't sure of how to behave, what was cool, etc.? Imagine if it was your first Christmas on a new planet - yowza.

Arthur's Perfect Christmas - Everyone's favorite Aardvark, Arthur, and his sister DW celebrate the holidays.

Bah Humduck! A Looney Christmas - Looney Tunes Time! It's Daffy Duck's turn to play Scrooge!

Barney: Christmas Star - Ah, Barney - aren't you lucky it's Christmas time??

Barney: A Very Merry Christmas - of course, let's put some Barney on this list.

Barney: Night Before Christmas - just in case you wanted more Barney Christmas...

Bear Who Slept Through Christmas, The Like "Snakes on a Plane" - this one is pretty self-explanatory.

Bob the Builder: Christmas to Remember - "Can we watch it!?" "If we have a glass of wine"

Bob the Builder: White Christmas - "Can we watch ANOTHER episode?!" "If we have an entire bottle of  wine"

Bush Christmas - Hmmm - a band of outlaws - Australian siblings - Dad cancels Christmas - color me excited!!!

Casper's Haunted Christmas - poor Casper, that annoyingly friendly ghost has to scare someone before the big day.  I'm not even referred to as a friendly ghost, and I would feel bad messing with someone this time of year.

Charles Dickens' The Christmas Carol - What do you think about Vincent Price reading Charles Dickens' story? I hope you think that's awesome; I most certainly do!

Christmas Carol, A - 1938 Adaptation of the Charles Dickens Classic.

Christmas Carol, A; A Picture of Magi - Some mid-1950s made for TV Christmas specials to make your day a bit brighter.

Christmas Classics: Jingle Bells - Here's a poorly animated romp for all of those families out there who are struggling - learn from the voices of David Alexander and Shelly Long (of Cheers Fame) that the best gifts don't come from the store.

Christmas Classics: O' Christmas Tree - Based on the cover art, someone took psychedelic drugs and had a frightening experience with a humanized Christmas tree.  It is for children, so it's probably quite sweet. I think if you're going to watch this, you need to steer clear of any non-prescription medications.

Christmas Classics: We Wish You a Merry Christmas - How ironic that you'd forget about music living in a town called Harmony.  Just be thankful that you're not a cartoon character.

Christmas Classics: Volume I - contains the world's greatest Christmas song - "Somewhere in Dreamland" (I apologize to anyone who got really excited there, it's straight up awful - but I have a real soft spot for it).

Christmas in Connecticut - The 1945 classic starring Barbara Stanwyck as a reporter who has seriously misrepresented herself in her biography.

Christmas Tale, A - This one is new to me, a 2008 Sundance Films production starring Catherine Deneuve - I'm looking forward to seeing it!

Christmas Too Many, A - Reviews for this movie about an aging hollywood star are almost universally bad; I'm not making any judgments.

Christmas Wife, The - An oldie about a widower looking for a new special lady - at Christmas.

Christmas With the King Family - The lovely King Sisters celebrate the holiday with their family in 1967.

Christmas Without Snow - 1980 most likely  made for TV movie about a widow moving to a new city.

Deck the Halls - Low budget cartoon NOT starring Danny Devito.  Be warned.

Gordon Ramsay's Ultimate Christmas - I'm not his biggest fan (he's just so darn mean to everyone) - but I acknowledge that he's one heck of a cook, and now you can emulate him (the cooking skills, not the language, please). Two episodes!

Grumpy Old Men - I recently watched this, and discovered that it's a Christmas movie; I had completely forgotten! I first watched this when I was in high school, when it originally came out and spent the whole time snuggling with my boyfriend, so I'll use that as my excuse.

He-Man And She-Ra: A Christmas Special - Wow! In the mid-1980s, you got together with your cousins at Christmas time (heck, in 2011 we're still rolling that way in my family) - that even includes super heroes. Step back to Christmas, 1985 - no time machine needed!

Hit Favorites: Jolly Holiday!Christmas specials featuring: Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Thomas the Tank Engine and Barney.

How About You - A younger sister takes care of a retirement home in Ireland or something - check it out - on the cover she looks REALLY excited - FYI, this movie is based on a short story written by beloved author Maeve Binchy.

Jack Frost - This is one of those wonderful classic stop-animation Christmas Specials from my childhood.  It stands up to the test of time!

Jack Frost - this is the live action version starring Michael Keaton, where he comes back to life as a snowman.  I believe this one actually made its start in theatres.

Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special - if you can tolerate Jeff Dunham and his puppets, you should watch and enjoy this.  If you, like me, can't stomach them - steer clear.

Jersey Christmas, A - Don't worry - there's no Snooki here, just some blue collar folks stuck working on Christmas Eve.

Jingle Bell Rap - Who doesn't love rapping cartoons from 1991?

Jingle Hell - The Irish Catholic Fitzgeralds (not my childhood best friend's family) and their not quite perfect NYC Christmas.

Joe Santa Claus; The Orphan's Christmas - Good old fashioned 1950s made for TV Christmas movies!

Jolly Old St. Nicholas - This is another low budget cartoon Christmas special.  I can't recommend watching it without some commercial breaks to water down the experience.

Kipper: Let it SnowSuper cute little puppy gets into the snow and Christmas time! What could be better?

Lawrence Welk Christmas Shows - Yep - that's right -almost THREE hours of Lawrence Welk Christmas shows!! Great stuff for playing in the background at your hipster ugly Christmas Sweater party.

Liberace's Christmas Special - Once you've exhausted nearly three hours of Lawrence Welk - cue up this bad boy!

Little Britain - 2006 Christmas Special Episode - This one is definitely not appropriate for children.  Little Britain is one of the funniest, most inappropriate skit shows out there.  REALLY inappropriate.

Meet Me in St. Louis - I apparently led a very sheltered life before meeting one of the coolest guys I know in 2004.  David introduced me to the glory that is Meet Me in St. Louis, an incredible musical starring Judy Garland.

Merry Mirthworm Christmas, A - Poor little worm doesn't fit in with folks in his new town. Luckily it's Christmas, so I suspect it will all work out.

Merry Yule Log, The - If you, like me, rent and don't have a fireplace, or maybe live somewhere warm - just click on the link!

Miracle on 34th Street, The - Apparently this was a made-for-tv version of the 1947 movie, made in 1955 - I'm withholding judgment until I see it.

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol - that silly little scamp Mr. Magoo is at it again - this time he's playing the part of Ebenezer Scrooge in the classic Dicken's tale 'A Christmas Carol.' I hope you, like me, have a place in your heart for cartoons from the early 1960s.

My Year Without Sex - I never would have guessed this was a Christmas movie (until I read the description).  I am definitely planning on watching it, as the reviews are pretty darn good.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - One of, if not THE, best Christmas movies of all time! This has been a family tradition since the 1990s.  LOVE it!!! Despite the fact that I watched it as a child, I would recommend waiting to watch it with yours until you've seen it yourself.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular, The – If you’ve not had the opportunity to see these incredible women perform in person – I think you should jump at any chance you’re afforded (we saw them for the first time last winter in Boston – they are AMAZING). Luckily for everyone, those who have, and haven’t seen the Rockettes perform – you can watch the show on your TV or computer – seriously – this is awesome stuff!!

Samantha, An American Girl Holiday - Because I grew up in the late eighties - early nineties, I was, of course, completely obsessed with the American Girl books (I never had any of the dolls, but made up for this fact with my daughter's extensive collection).  I believe this was the first of the books to be made into a movie, and it was really well done.

Santa and Pete - I grew up without grandfathers, so the idea of James Earl Jones being my grandpa is pretty darn sweet, especially when he sits down with me and tells me the story of Santa and Pete.  While that will never happen for me, it happens for Terence in this movie!

Santa and the Three BearsNaughty bear cubs decide to skip the big sleep, and keep an eye out for the big  guy. I suspect they deserve coal, but instead will get a heart warming lesson.

Santa Claus, The MovieOne of the elves defects and starts working for an evil toy baron who wants to put Santa out of business (how dare he!!?!?!?). This is the version from the 1980s with the irrepressible Dudley Moore.

Santa Claus Conquers the MartiansIt sounds like the martians are fed up with kids being so into Santa so they get the idea of kidnapping him (and a couple of kids) and bringing them back to Mars.

Scrooge - A very old adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Tangerine Bear, TheA poor bear (you guessed it - tangerine colored!) has his smile sewn on upside down, and no one wants to buy him.  Sad stuff - I'm honestly not sure how it relates to Christmas, but maybe you can tell me.

Thomas & Friends: Merry Christmas Thomas - Thomas and his friends. 'Nuff said.

Thomas & Friends: Ultimate Christmas CollectionYet another very festive episode of Thomas and Friends!

Ugly Duckling's Christmas Wish, The - I am so glad that my parents didn't name me Ugly. I suspect it would have had a REALLY bad impact on my self esteem.

Under the Mistletoe - From what I can tell, a happy family is torn apart at the holidays by a Christmas Tree related car crash.  At least one review mentions ghosts.  It looks very Lifetime, or ABC Family - which means I ought to watch it.

Up on the Housetop - A super schlubby cartoon whose family has abandoned him at Christmas, reminding him that he loves them.  Or something like that.

Usual Children, The - The only review on this is one star; due to language used in the movie.  I'm going to have to take the time to watch it to find out more about it.  The tag line explains that it's Christmas Even, the kids are misbehaving, and, he takes them upstairs to tell them a story.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas - A Christmas cartoon about being happy with the way you are, especially when you're a turtle with no shell (which, I believe, is a salamander, right?)

We're No Angels - I'd never even heard of this holiday movie starring Humphrey Bogart, and I can't wait to watch it!! This purports to be about some criminals who escape from prison to an island in France.

Yes, Virginiathis is an adorable animated version of the true story of a little girl who wrote to the newspaper asking if Santa was real because "If you see it in The Sun, it's so."  I’m really excited about this new addition to the Netflix streaming Christmas library!

Yuletide Fireplace in a Box - More streaming fireplaces!!!

Flamingo Father Christmas

I work in an office, not the most glamorous place in the world, but I'm not the most glamorous gal in the world, and the benefits are fantastic, so you'll get no complaints from me.  Sometimes the mundanity of an office can start to feel like a cement block tied to your ankle while you're swimming across a river in January, so you have to find ways to keep yourself entertained.

This week, that entertainment was a little project I like to call "Flamingo Father Christmas." Some "wacky" person stuck a plastic lawn flamingo in the lobby potted plant long before I started here (so, at least six years ago), and I was giving it a look last week, and realized that, although we're not allowed to have a "Christmas Tree" (the custodian got in big trouble for that a few years ago because of the possibility that someone might be offended at some point in the future), there's no rule about not having  Christmas Flamingo.

I decided that our Flamingo needed a new look.  I talked to a coworker who got even more into the idea than I was, she took the task of FFC's outfit, and I took on the (minimal) task of his facial hair.  I've posted the final result below.  Isn't he beautiful??

'Tis the Season

This year we bucked tradition and bought a Christmas tree.  I've loved the straggly natural trees we've found the past few years on my parents' land, but the time and opportunity hasn't availed itself to me, so I paid $20.99 for my tree this year.

I know $20.99 is a good deal for a tree around here, I saw at Walmart they're selling them for $24.98 plus tax, and here on campus, they've got them from $15 - $35. My sister Sarah always goes out and cuts down a tree with her family at Piper Mountain (check out a cool article about them), and I think it's somewhere in the $30 range.

When we lived in Anchorage, it was, unsurprisingly, a lot more expensive to buy a tree, we paid over $40 for a tree that was around 4 1/2 feet tall (we set it on a little end table which was quite cute), but nothing beats the facebook post I saw from a friend in California this weekend.  She showed a picture of her wife and son, with the nice, but somewhat skinny 8-foot tree they'd chosen behind them, then stated that when they'd found out the tree cost $175, they decided to look elsewhere.  Seriously - $175 for a tree??? Not a diamond studded tree? Not a tree that produces fossil fuels? Not a living tree, but one that's in a lot dying its slow death? Not cool.

I feel even better about my $20.99 now.  And, I have to say I think it's beautiful.  This is a picture of it fully decorated, it's not actually tilted, nor is it fuzzy, I took this with my old school cell phone (circa a wicked long time ago), but you get the idea.

Merry Christmas!!!!

2018 Netflix Streaming Christmas Movies

*Updated as of November 25, 2018 - if you're on Facebook, like the page, and you will see when there are updates.
This is what I call an act of love…

Abominable Christmas - Two little Abominables trying to escape an evil scientist meet a young girl and spend Christmas with her family.

All American Christmas Carol - Reviews are NOT very positive - apparently this is a bit of a twisted take on the classic "A Christmas Carol" "Scrooge" story, with Taryn Manning (of OITNB fame these days) playing the Scrooge character, and being given the opportunity to turn her life around with the help of three ghosts (one of whom is played by Meatloaf).

Angels in the Snow - a grumpy family on a Christmas vacation take in a stranded family.  There is apparently a big twist at the end, don't read the reviews if you don't want spoilers.

Bad Santa - Willie and Marcus are the absolute worst Santa and Elf, because of the fact that they are awful people, and are criminals.  This is a really dark movie, but it does have some serious sweetness at its core. This is NOT a movie for the whole family, unless your whole family is comprised of adults.

Bad Santa 2 - They're back! The worst possible Santa and Elf duo return, with the help of Kathy Bates as Willie's mom.  I haven't seen this, but the original was pretty spectacular.

Bob's Broken Sleigh - this is a newer movie (2015) - It appears that the premise is that a little elf (Bob) is trying to upgrade Santa's sleigh - something goes wrong - there is a crash (will Christmas be canceled!?!?) - and he needs help to get back up in the air.

Bojack Horseman Christmas Special - This animated special isn't for the kids, it also probably isn't for you unless you're into the show.

Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas, The - I haven't seen this - but the pictures showing up do look true to the original illustrations in the Cat in the Hat, and other Seussian hits.  It appears to be a cartoon - which is a big positive for me - as Mike Myer's terrifying turn as the Cat in the Hat ruined live action for me in the genre.

Christmas Candle, The - Susan Boyle is in this historic holiday flick about a new minister coming to town and messing with some good old fashioned Christmas traditions.

Christmas Cracker - This is a documentary about people who are obsessed with Christmas.  I'm king of disappointed that they didn't try to interview me, but I'll get over it.

Christmas Crush - One question: what kind of school does their reunion at Christmas time? Seriously, I've only seen this in movies, in the real world aren't they always in the summer? This is a cute little flick, I've seen it, and it's about a woman getting to reunite with her high school crush at her reunion (at Christmas).

Christmas in the Smokies - Made for TV holiday magic, I tell you!  A woman trying to save her family's farm; an ex who is a famous musician? What more could you want? Oh yeah - it takes place at Christmas time!!

Christmas on Salvation Street - a widowed minister and his family move to the inner city, which will take some adjustment.

Christmas Prince, A - This one comes out November 17, 2017, so you'll have to wait a few days (unless that date has already gone past, then you're all set).  It's a made for Netflix special about a journalist and a Prince, and CHRISTMAS.

Christmas Project, The - When I saw the first screen capture, I thought it was a movie from the 1980s, but it was made in 2016 - some reviewers say it channels "A Christmas Story," and apparently is about four boys who have to make gifts for their bullies?

Christmas Ranch - This one's got all the big hits - naughty teen has to spend the holidays with Grandma on a ranch of all places, connects with a horse, tries to save the aforementioned ranch, learns an important lesson, and has a super merry Christmas.  I'm guessing - but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Christmas Star, A - It turns out that if you're born under the Christmas Star, you have magical powers.  In reading the description, I wasn't really convinced I wanted to watch it.  Then I checked out reviews, and noticed Kylie Minogue and Pierce Brosnan in it - needless to say, I've added this to my wish list.

Christmas Town - I've never seen this relatively new made-for-tv looking gem.  A single mother visits her father, whose town is "Totally Consumed with Christmas" - my kind of place!

Curious George, a Very Monkey Christmas - I do love those cute little Curious George cartoons, along with the Man in the Yellow Hat, it appears the two of them are having a hard time deciding what to give each other for the holiday!

Dear Santa - I'm a sucker for Amy Acker, and this is a really cute made for TV Christmas movie about a woman who finds a little girl's letter to Santa, and ends up getting involved.

Dogwalker's Christmas Tale, A - A privileged young lady has to decide between a handsome guy and adorable dogs and her super rich boss.  What do you think she'll decide?

Dreamworks Happy Holidays from Madagascar - You get a hit of Valentine's Day and then two Christmas specials!

Dreamworks Holiday Classics - while the word "classic" might be pushing it - only time will tell!  Four holiday tales involving your favorite (?) Dreamworks' stars - the digital casts of Madagascar, Shrek, and How to Train Your Dragon.

Dreamworks Shrek's Swamp Stories - time to join everyone's favorite ogre in some fun holiday theme adventures.  Not only does this have Christmas - but Halloween as well!

Fireplace for Your Home: Classic - this has festive holiday music along with beautiful snowy scenes - wonderful for those of us anxious for winter in the middle of July!

Get Santa - Santa gets arrested? What kind of world are we living in??  Thankfully, a father-son team is going to get him out of there!

Hector - Reviews are pretty much unanimously positive about this unconventional British film about a homeless man reconnecting with his family around the holidays.

Holiday Baggage - Time to see if getting the whole family together for the holidays will rekindle relationships.

Holidays - another collection of holiday themed horror shorts.  There is just one Christmas story on here, but, in general, if you like horror movies, you should give this a try.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas -  This is not the animated classic, it's the 2000 version with a terrifyingly green Jim Carey, and it does attempt to address the anti-consumerism themes of the original.  Also, there is incredibly catchy music and some fantastic hair styles.

How Sarah Got Her Wings - It's Christmas and what's an angel-in-training to do? Earn those wings!

Koala Brothers Outback Christmas, The - I'm not familiar with the Koala Brothers - but it appears it's a British show for the littles.  It is some sort of adorable claymation and I recommend it on that alone!  Seriously - who doesn't want to watch two koalas flying an airplane and tracking down their penguin friend in Antarctica?

Kung Fu Panda: Holiday - Here is one of those newer "holiday" movies; it's winter, it's a special, meaningful holiday, etc. etc. etc. In this new arrival, Po has to deal with some wackiness, and then learn the meaning of Chris- Oops - I mean - the meaning of "Winter Feast."

Magic Snowflake - the Sequel to Santa's Apprentice.  So - watch that one, and then decide if you're up for a second dose.

Mariah Carey's Merriest Christmas - Say what you will about MC, she sure can belt out a Christmas tune.  This is a variety show with a bunch of other celebrities, singing, and a reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mickey Mouse - This is a Christmas special with a number of Disney Christmas shorts (I haven't seen this one - but I highly recommend Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, so I think this is probably worth checking out).

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas - Three cute Disney cartoons: Mickey & Minnie play out one of my favorite O. Henry stories: Gift of the Magi; Donald's three wacky nephews play out a Christmas version of the movie Groundhog Day; and Goofy and his son Max figure out that Santa is real.  *Most disturbing part: when all of the ducks at the table get excited about eating a beautifully roast turkey.

Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas - I am imagining this to be the sequel to Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas.  According to Netflix's description it's a holiday battle between Mickey and Minnie and that mean ol' Scrooge McDuck.

Miracle on 34th Street - This is the absolutely wonderful 1994 version of this holiday classic.  I love the original, and I really feel this remake stayed so true to the message.  It's wonderful, and you should show it to your children to make sure it's a part of their childhoods.

Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir:  This is the Christmas special for an animated show about a girl who transforms herself into a superhero (Ladybug).

Mule-Tide Christmas - This looks like a digital flick for the youngest of the youngsters.  You've got wicked goblins, a certain jolly old elf who wears a red suit, and his trusty mule.  Sounds good (for the 5-7 crowd) to me!

Pee-wee's Playhouse: Christmas Special - If you're ready for a trip down mid-1980s memory lane - this is the special for you!  If Pee-wee himself isn't enough to pull you in - you've got Zsa Zsa Gabor, Frankie Avalon, Oprah, and even KD Lang to join in the fun!

Power Rangers Samurai: Christmas Together, Friends Forever - I admit that the Power Rangers have never really grown on me.  I will also admit that I sat through countless hours of them when I was a babysitter to a family with four young sons.  I might even sit through them for 23 more minutes to see this special!

Power Rangers Super Samurai: Stuck on Christmas - here we go - some more Power Rangers (for those of you who are into that sort of thing).

Russell Peters Christmas, A - This 2011 movie was filmed in the style of a 1970s variety show.  Guests range from Michael Buble to Pamela Anderson. I've not seen it, so I'm hoping someone will be able to give me a good review.

Santa Buddies - those rascally golden retriever pups are at it again - Christmas style!

Santa's Apprentice - What DOES happen when a young orphan is picked to be Santa's successor? He becomes an apprentice of course!
Search for Santa Paws, The - If you liked Santa Buddies, you definitely want to watch this prequel!  If your children like Santa Buddies, and you need an hour and a half to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine, then they definitely need to watch this!

Spirit of Christmas, The - I've actually seen this one - I can't remember if it was on Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel.  This hardened woman goes to stay at an Inn to sell it, but ends up meeting (and maybe falling in love!?) with a handsome ghost from the past (an actual ghost, like "boo" not just a ghost from her past).

Trailer Park Boys: Live at the North Pole - I think the title really says it all.

Trailer Park Boys: Xmas Special - I'm not a Trailer Park Boys fan, so I'm going to leave this to you to discover on your own.

Tree Man - a documentary about the people who cultivate the most cherished of holiday memories - Christmas Trees!

Uncle Nick - Reviews are pretty much split - people either love or hate this dark comedy - it's apparently very dirty and twisted, which means I'll probably like it. This is the story of one awful brother making his slightly less terrible sibling's holiday party a failure.

Very Murray Christmas, A - If you love Bill Murray, and appreciate what an oddball he is - I think you'd better put this on the agenda for running in the background at this year's cookie baking party (which is exactly what I did last year, and probably will do again in 2016).
White Christmas - Quite possibly the greatest movie ever made.  Fact: my sister and I can perform the "Sisters" routine in its entirety, and sing the song together on a regular basis. If you've never seen it - watch it! If you've already seen it, why aren't you watching it again???

Journey to the Christmas Star - Something about the cover of this reminds me of "the Golden Compass" (most likely a girl riding a bear).  This is a Norwegian movie, that, from reviews, was poorly dubbed, but is a really lovely story.  I plan to catch it at some point, and will fill this out a bit more with some facts!

Last Holiday - This is not your typical Christmas movie - but it is a REALLY sweet movie that takes place at Christmas time. I would put this in the While You Were Sleeping Category of a movie that takes place at Christmas, and has a lovely message.

Legend of Frosty the Snowman, The - Word to the Wise: this is not the original Frosty movie - this is circa 2005, and reviewers say it is a pale comparison.

Love Actually - If you love Christmas, or being a hopeless romantic, or Mariah Carey songs, or a host of other things - you will love this modern day Christmas classic!

Magic Snowflake - the Sequel to Santa's Apprentice.  So - watch that one, and then decide if you're up for a second dose.

Mandie and the Forgotten Christmas - Well, I can't say I recommend this one - most commonly seen in the reviews are mentions of the racism and sexism.  I would certainly leave this off my list this year.

Marry Me for Christmas - A lot of movies remind me that we need to get rid of the idea that people MUST get married for happiness.  This movie, like that one with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, follows the theme of  fake fiance.  I have a hunch that they will fall in love in the end like (spoiler alert!) Holiday in Handcuffs.  But there's always the chance this one will make the point that you should be happy with yourself, and don't require another person for your own satisfaction.

Mule-Tide Christmas - This looks like a digital flick for the youngest of the youngsters.  You've got wicked goblins, a certain jolly old elf who wears a red suit, and his trusty mule.  Sounds good (for the 5-7 crowd) to me!

My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas - These are the middle age ponies (from 2005 - they're updated from the mid-1980s ponies I knew, and prior to the new ponies that have inspired the Bronies movement).  I think there could be some very valuable nostalgia.

Pete's Christmas - Groundhog Day meets Christmas Day.  I know Elmo already tried this whole "Christmas is Every Day" thing - it sounds like Pete's having just as hard a time.

Santa Claws - NOT the horror movie it sounds like - this one is about KITTENS!!!

Santa's Apprentice - What DOES happen when a young orphan is picked to be Santa's successor? He becomes an apprentice of course!

Saving Santa - I've never seen this little digitally animated gem, but the reviews are pretty great - it turns out, you'll find out how Santa delivers all those presents!

Scrooged - HOORAY! It's back - this is an absolute TREASURE of a movie.  Starring Bill Murray as a modern (1980s modern) scrooge, and his interesting host of ghosts.  I can't recommend it enough, if only for the awesome defense of mice.

Search for Santa Paws, The - If you liked Santa Buddies, you definitely want to watch this prequel!  If your children like Santa Buddies, and you need an hour and a half to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine, then they definitely need to watch this!

Secret World of Santa, The - This was a late-1990s French Television Show - there are 26 episodes that have been dubbed into English.

Small Town Santa - If you live in a small town, and arrest an intruder claiming to be Santa, be warned: you are about to get a full-size-sample of the Christmas Spirit!

Thomas & Friends: Santa's Little Engine - Guess who's guiding Santa's sleigh!! Nope - it's not Rudolph - it's THOMAS!!!

Trailer Park Boys: Xmas Special - I'm not a Trailer Park Boys fan, so I'm going to leave this to you to discover on your own.

Traveler, The - I'm not sure if Christmas is anything more than a setting in this very poorly rated movie starring Val Kilmer.  One of us should watch it - I'm nominating you.

Very Minty Christmas, A - My little ponies (I think these are the original ponies - or O.P. as the kids should say) celebrate Christmas.

Very Murray Christmas, A - If you love Bill Murray, and appreciate what an oddball he is - I think you'd better put this on the agenda for running in the background at this year's cookie baking party (which is exactly what I did last year, and probably will do again in 2016).

While You Were Sleeping - I have absolutely loved this movie since the first time I saw it.  It made me fall in love with Sandra Bullock, and made me able to tolerate Bill Pullman.  The plot is farfetched, but adorable.
White Christmas - Quite possibly the greatest movie ever made.  Fact: my sister and I can perform the "Sisters" routine in its entirety, and sing the song together on a regular basis. If you've never seen it - watch it! If you've already seen it, why aren't you watching it again???

Winnie the Pooh, A Very Merry Pooh Year - We already know Pooh's not the brightest bulb on the tree, but we want to watch him have fun adventures during the holiday season anyway!

Christmas (on Netflix) in July?

I can't be the only person who feels the flush of Christmas mid-July.  I know I'm not, as my sister Faith, is as guilty of it as I am.

We try, and we try, and we try to keep ourselves from feeling too festive until at least November - but there's something about a heatwave that gets me hankering for eggnog and wrapping presents.

I plan on unveiling the 2011 Comprehensive Netflix streaming Christmas movie list (with reviews) tonight or tomorrow.  I've been spending some of my spare time combing Netflix looking for movies.

There is also the possibility of including a Thanksgiving and New Year's list - obviously these movies aren't nearly as plentiful as the Christmas ones - but wouldn't you agree that Alice's Restaurant is just as worthy of my blog as Thomas and Friends: Ultimate Christmas?

So - if you're as excited about the upcoming (eventually) holidays as I am - it's time to get AMPED up!! The Christmas list is coming!!

Preparing for the Mad Truffle Dash

Tonight is the night.

My dishes are clean, the kitchen is sparkling, little bottles of liquor are lined up on my spice shelf.

Baby, it's truffle making time.

I plan on going through 15 pounds of chocolate, if you're looking for an idea of how many truffles I'll be making - nevermind the other ingredients (which are a secret, so you don't get to know about them!!) - I'm about to make people seriously happy with some good Christmas presents!

Flavors will include:
Eggnog (with spiced rum)
Dark Chocolate with Grand Marnier
White chocolate with Chambord
Dark/White Chocolate with Peppermint Schnapps
White Chocolate and Amaretto
And numerous others.  Last year, my fave was a dark chocolate and Tia Maria mix, but I didn't buy any more TM, so it's unlikely that will happen with my budget in rapid shrink mode.

If these truffles sound awesome to you - you should buy some from the woman who taught me all I know (and who ships to wherever) - she has some new flavors, including a Chai Tea (which I sadly haven't had a chance to try yet!)  - check her out at www.dulcetruffles.com

Updated List of Streaming Christmas Movies on Netflix

*Updated as of November 12, 2017 - if you're on Facebook, like the page, and you will see when there are updates.
This is what I call an act of love…
12 Dates of Christmas - Do you love Christmas and miss Saved by the Bell? Or maybe just one of those two? Come on, this is an ABC Family Christmas movie - if you like one, you like them all.  Watch it here before it airs this December!

12 Dog Days Till Christmas - I don't think I can really do a better job describing this movie than Netflix.  A foster child finds out the animal shelter is closing, and only has 12 days to find homes for all the dogs.

Abominable Christmas - Two little Abominables trying to escape an evil scientist meet a young girl and spend Christmas with her family.

Abominable Noel - Nope, it's not about the worst Christmas ever - it's about Abominable Snowmen joining with humans for Christmas!

All I Want for Christmas - Nope, it's not a typo, it's another Christmas movie!! What's the best reason to start dating again? Because your child wants a new father, that's why.

America's Funniest Home Videos: Hollidazed - I think we should have some sort of a contest - how many dads do you think are going to get hit in the crotch with plastic baseball bats this Christmas? Closest guess gets to pick the next movie!

Angels in the Snow - a grumpy family on a Christmas vacation take in a stranded family.  There is apparently a big twist at the end, don't read the reviews if you don't want spoilers.

Back to Christmas - This has the undeniable look of a Hallmark or Lifetime style Christmas hit! The description claims a woman wakes up a year later to a Christmas do-over; personally, I think I would use my knowledge of the future to do some smart investing, but I suspect we're going into romance town.

Casper's Haunted Christmas - poor Casper, that annoyingly friendly ghost has to scare someone before the big day.  I'm not even referred to as a friendly ghost, and I would feel bad messing with someone this time of year.

Christmas Belle - I'm partial to Beauty and the Beast when it comes to fictional characters named Belle - but I'm willing to give this a try.  Will this beautiful Belle be able to thaw out the icy rich dude whose antique collection she's cataloguing?

Christmas Bunny - This movie has been coming and going from Netflix over the years, and I still haven't watched it yet!  A young girl finds an injured rabbit on Christmas Eve, and brings it to "the Bunny Woman" for help.

Christmas Horror Story, A - Yes, it's gory and horror-y, but it's also Christmasey and it has William Shatner.  I watched this, it's entertaining, but forgettable.  However, if you're a horror movie gal like me, I say give it a try.

Christmas in the City - This stars not only Ashley Williams, who seems to star in 50% of my fave holiday flicks on the Hallmark Channel, but also singing star Ashanti!  Someone's boss fires a department store Santa who happens to be THE Santa.  What's he doing working at a department store? You'll have to watch to find out.

Christmas in the Smokies - Made for TV holiday magic, I tell you!  A woman trying to save her family's farm; an ex who is a famous musician? What more could you want? Oh yeah - it takes place at Christmas time!!

Christmas is Here Again - This animated Christmas romp stars Jay Leno, Ed Asner, Kathy Bates and a bunch of other people.  I'm watching it just for the star power.

Christmas Kiss, A - Reviewers seem pretty split on this ABC-Family/Lifetime style Chick Flick.  A woman who has trouble with her boss, for some reason kisses a random gent on an elevator, only to discover that he is the boss's boyfriend.

Christmas Kiss II, A - A sequel to A Christmas Kiss? You had me at, well, the fact that it's a sequel to that movie.  It looks to be a new host of characters, so give it a watch, and let me know what you think.

Christmas Miracle at Sage Creek - According to reviewers this is an "old west" style Christmas movie, reviews are pretty mixed.

Christmas on Salvation Street - This new addition has no reviews so far - so my only information is from the synopsis - a Widowed Preacher moves his family to the inner city.

Christmas Wedding Baby -  I haven't seen this, and nothing in the description has anything to do with Christmas - so maybe that's someone's name? I really don't know.

Evergreen Christmas - I know that if I had a choice between being a musician and running a Christmas Tree Farm, it'd be a no-brainer - obviously Christmas Tree Farm - the heroine of this story has some indecision though.

Good Luck Charlie: It's Christmas - This looks like a 2011 Version of a Full House Christmas (not the plot, but the family friendly TV show made movie length silliness), the ratings are actually quite good - I've never seen the show, but I just might have to watch the movie!

Gremlins - no, this is not a feel-good holiday hug fest.  But it's an awesome little time machine back to when I was a little girl.  If you haven't seen it, you must.  If you haven't seen it in twenty years, why the heck not watch it again?

Happy Christmas - Here is a Christmas movie starring Lena Dunham, Anna Kendrick, and Melanie Lynskey - three of my fave lady actors. Reviews are mixed, but one introduced me to the term "mumblecore." I'll be watching, for the actors alone. My moms watched this one recently and said it is "AWFUL."

Heart of Christmas, The - This looks like a sweet but sad movie - a family with a child with terminal cancer wants to give him one last Christmas in October. Reviews are mostly good.

I Am Santa Claus - This is a documentary following professional Santas.  I watched a similar movie a couple of years ago, and it was wonderful - this certainly looks worth a look!

In the Land of Magic - You have a wicked goblin, Santa, and a mule named Napo - this is an animated flick for the youngest members of the family.

Legend of Frosty the Snowman, The - Word to the Wise: this is not the original Frosty movie - this is circa 2005, and reviewers say it is a pale comparison.

Mariah Carey's Merriest Christmas - Say what you will about MC, she sure can belt out a Christmas tune.  This is a variety show with a bunch of other celebrities, singing, and a reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas."

My Dad is Scrooge - Reviews say this is a good one for the littles, that the talking barn animals are adorable, provided your age is still in the single digits.

My Little Pony: A Very Minty Christmas - These are the middle age ponies (from 2005 - they're updated from the mid-1980s ponies I knew, and prior to the new ponies that have inspired the Bronies movement).  I think there could be some very valuable nostalgia.

My Santa - This looks pretty cute - a woman falls for a mall Santa - the usual story, but this has a twist - he's actually the REAL Santa's son!

Nightmare Before Christmas, The - This is a classic - while it is (according to Burton) actually a Halloween movie, it's definitely a Christmas classic in my house.  The music, the visuals, and the story are all wonderful for all ages.

Noel - This one is filled with some powerhouse actors - Robin Williams, Penelope Cruz, Susan Sarandon, Paul Walker. I've not seen this in quite a few years, but remember it being a sweet holiday drama.

Perfect Gift, The - Ruben Studdard (of American Idol fame) stars (and most likely sings) in this lesson on what Christmas is really all about.

Pete's Christmas - Groundhog Day meets Christmas Day.  I know Elmo already tried this whole "Christmas is Every Day" thing - it sounds like Pete's having just as hard a time.

Ref, The - Rich people taken hostage on Christmas Eve? It stars Denis Leary? I'm in! Reviews call this a well written dark comedy.

Small Town Santa - If you live in a small town, and arrest an intruder claiming to be Santa, be warned: you are about to get a full-size-sample of the Christmas Spirit!

So This is Christmas - Check it out - Vivica A Fox is in this movie about a group of underprivileged kids and their holiday pageant.  A note to parents: though this is categorized as family friendly, the reviews say otherwise, that there's heavy drug use and violence in it.

Thomas and Friends: Santa's Little Engine - Guess who's guiding Santa's sleigh!! Nope - it's not Rudolph - it's THOMAS!!!

Three Dogateers, The - Three dogs, with the help of Santa go after the thieves who broke into their owner's house at Christmas time.

White Christmas - Quite possibly the greatest movie ever made.  Fact: my sister and I can perform the "Sisters" routine in its entirety, and sing the song together on a regular basis. If you've never seen it - watch it! If you've already seen it, why aren't you watching it again???
